More is More, and if you Disagree You're Probably a Basic Bitch
If you are reading this then you are probably aware of my intense obsession with maximalist design. In a time where minimalism has been the #1 design trend for quite a while, I just can't seem to hop on board. I appreciate the beauty of minimalist designs, but think they lack a certain sense of individuality that other design styles offer. Let me explain...
There is a very specific formula that goes into a minimalist design: a clean lined sofa, natural textured rug (grass or wool), some sort of vintage chair (usually leather), tribal block pillows, and a large house plant in a simple planter. It’s the “California bungalow chic” look that you’ve seen EVERYWHERE. Crisp white walls, modern photography in white frames, some distressed wood, you get the idea.
I am a firm believer in the idea that your space should be a representation of yourself. Fill your rooms with your favorite items, colors and textures, and you’ll be sure to absolutely adore your space. So although these minimalist elements make a beautiful space, they do not make a space with a strong personality. To put it simply, minimalist bungalow style is the basic bitch of the interior design world.
Every maximalist space has a clear personality, and a story to tell. Each space is filled to the brim with different textures, colors, and patterns that all fit together like one crazy perfect puzzle. There is so much peace and cohesiveness in these creative rooms. You can tell how much time, love, and labor were put into each space, and it makes them all the more interesting and chic. Minimalist spaces are thrown together like a staged home: clearly defined rooms meant to serve as a quiet background.
